A sub-theme that really makes this song is the quote from William Cowper's There Is A Fountain Filled with Blood. Cowper spent much of his life suicidally depressed, and wrote magnificent hymns to combat his illness. Along with Fountain, he is known for the masterpiece God Moves in a Mysterious Way. John Newton, author of Amazing Grace, was Cowper's best friend and pastoral companion, often spending hours with Cowper, guiding him through the throes of despair and hopelessness. At Newton's instigation, the pair combined to write the Olney Hymnal, containing over 300 hymns which still bless Christ's church today after 250 years. Hearing There is a Fountain woven through Amazing Grace brought big wet sloppy tears to my eyes as I remembered the two men working together to heal the souls of centuries of heavy hearted believers with the deep, rich theology of their hymns. It is a gracious God indeed Who weaves such tapestries of providence.
